Juror's Statement

"Having served on the Georgia Council for the Arts for several years as well as curating and jurying many previous exhibitions, I don't believe I have ever seen such a concentration of talent in one area. The elation I felt in viewing such exceptional and diverse work was tempered throughout the day by the prospect of having to fulfill my juror's mission and select a show. Excluding any of this fine work was excruciating, and I want all the artists to know that the work I saw in Spartanburg was some of the finest I've seen anywhere. Also, due to the high quality of of the work, my way of resolving the presentation of awards in some cases was to recognize individual artists rather than a specific piece of art." --Jack Leigh

Art Rosenbaum , Juror

Art Rosenbaum is a painter, muralist, and illustrator as well as a collector and performer of American folk music. He has been on the faculty of the University of Georgia's Lamar Dodd School of Art since 1976 and holds the University's first Wheatley Professorship in Fine Arts. He earned an AB in Art History, and an MFA in Painting (1961) at Columbia University and worked in Paris on a Fulbright Grant; twenty years later he taught at Freiburg University in Germany on a Fulbright Senior Professorship. He has also taught at the University of Iowa and on the University of Georgia's Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy.

Among his exhibitions are the Corcoran Gallery's 41st Biennial of American Painting, and his works are in many private and public collections including the New Orleans Museum of Art, The Georgia Museum of Art, and the Columbus (GA) Museum. His 2000 solo exhibition at New York's Blue Mountain Gallery was reviewed in Art in America. Among his commissions are murals at the UCLA School of Law and the Center for Humanities and Arts at the University of Georgia. Rosenbaum was a 2003 recipient of a Governor of Georgia’s Award in the Humanities and currently serves on the Georgia Council for the Arts.
