TAITEILIJAN
LAUSUNTO
Nämä sekatekniikka maalaukset-—suuurimmksi
osaksi keskikokoisia, monet paneeleilla—on maalattu
viimeisen kolmen vuoden aikana. Niissä on melkein
piirustuksenomainen sävy. Useissa on kollaasia
ja pintamuutoksia, jotka on tehty akryylimeediumeilla.
Niiden värivalinnat ja terävät ykstyiskohdat
ovat myos laadultaan hillitympiä. Olen käyttänyt
siellä täällä figuratiivisia elementteja,
vaikkakin tyylini on pääasiassa abstraktia.
Useat teemat pilkahtelevat esiin tassä maalausryhmässä:
“Kielillä puhuen”—kahden kielen/
Yhdysvallat versus Eurooppa-kokemus, “Matkakumppanit”—ihmisen
elämän ja kohtalon arvoitus, aina mielessäni,
ja ennen kaikkea monitahoisuuden ja avointen mahdollisuuksien
teema. Toivon etta näiden maalausten harkittu monitarkoituksellisuus
rohkaisee katsojaa siirtymään kuvan edessä
olevaan symboolisen tilaan ja täyttamään
sen oman mielensä sisällöllä ja
omilla tulkinnoillaan. Me kohtaamme siinä tilassa.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
These mixed-media paintings—mostly
medium-sized, many on panels,—have been painted
during the past three years. There is almost a drawing-like
quality to them. Several have collage and surface variations
created with acrylic mediums. There is also a more muted
quality in color choices, and a subtler way with sharp
details. I have used occasional figurative elements,
although the main language is abstract.
There are several themes that weave
in and out of this body of work: “Speaking in
Tongues”—the personal bilingual/US vs. Europe
experience, “Fellow Travelers”—the
enigma of human life and destiny, always present in
my mind, and above all, the theme of complexity and
open-endedness. I hope that the deliberate ambiguity
in these paintings will invite the viewer to step into
the figurative space in front of the images and fill
it with their own projections and interpretations. It
is the space where we meet. |

“The
paintings of Guy Stevens offer us a travelogue of
splendid fantasies and dreamlike narratives, and while
his subject matter varies from Munich to Milano, his
essential style is consistent. Employing flamboyant
colors, his flat lyrical shapes suggest qualities
of both primitive and impressionistic art. He often
adopts an elevated viewpoint giving his work a tilt
in perspective that channels an extraordinary energy
and movement. He draws us into the movement with an
explosion of color, which culminates in a celebration
of life.” — Kris Kline, Director Gallery
—
Stevens began his professional career in 1970 after
graduating from Furman University with a major in
art. His paintings are held in public and private
collections worldwide. His painting tours span the
globe. Museum Exhibits include Greenville County Museum,
Spartanburg County Museum, Pickens Museum, Clemson
Museum and Furman University.
My true education and self-discovery began after I
graduated from Furman with a degree in the visual
arts in 1970. Thirty six years later I have painted
all over the world and sold paintings in forty countries.
During this same time frame, I have worked in eight
studios/ galleries in downtown Greenville and worked
for months at a time in studios in Paris, New York,
Bermuda, Munich, Montreal and San Francisco. The interplay
of light and texture is a prominent influence on the
choice of subject and technique. I think of myself
as an expressionist in the tradition of Chagall, Matisse
and Van Gogh. I am an intuitive, expressive colorist.
I strive to give the viewer a sense of uplifting inner
connection to my images.”
