ART OF THE RAINFOREST

" . . . in the many years that we have been going to gallery shows and museum exhibitions, we can honestly say that it (ART OF THE RAINFOREST) was the single best body of work we have ever beheld! We were simply in awe. . . . The exhibit is stunning . . . An A plus all the way around." Gamini and Lisa Ratnavira

A nationally touring exhibit, Art of the Rainforest, is a mesmerizing exhibition that features paintings and sculptures by leading artists who specialize in rainforest themes and subjects. The exhibition is curated by David J. Wagner, PhD.

Art show features world’s rainforests
by GARY HENDERSON

The destruction that ravages the flora and fauna of rainforests around the world seems to pause briefly in an exhibit that opens Jan. 15 at the Spartanburg County Museum of Art galleries.

Visitors who view the 66 paintings and sculptures in the exhibit titled “Art of the Rainforest” are given a rare look into and beneath the 130-foot green canopies that cover the most diverse environments on the planet. [more]

Thompson Prichard, and William Trost Richards as well as many Upstate South Carolina artists including August and Irma Cook, Margaret Law, and Josephine Sibley Couper.

Portrait of art in Spartanburg
by LINDA CONLEY

Spartanburg's prized redhead is celebrating her 100th birthday.

Many might not know her, but she turned heads almost immediately when she arrived in April 1907. Editorials were written about her, and residents raised $500 to get her to stay.

This redhead is Robert Henri's oil-on-canvas portrait of the "The Girl with Red Hair." She was part of the city's first art exhibition 100 years ago. Residents loved her so much that she became the first painting in the city's art collection. [more]
