Juror’s Statement

This year's Hub City Art Fair represented work from a wealth of conceptual and stylistic orientations by both professional and untrained artists. Indeed, the artwork was so broad in form and idea that it mirrored the pluralism that has come to typify contemporary art. It was an exciting show and the preliminary salon style installation in which work covered almost every inch of wall and floor, gave expression to the vitality of the arts in the region. My first choice was to keep all the art in the show, rather than juror anyone out, as a statement about community, the democracy of many individual voices, and the postmodern suspicion of what and who constitutes aesthetic quality. Alas, my role as juror was constrained and I was obliged to eliminate some of the work. But I wish to congratulate all of the artists who participated in the show and encourage them to continue exhibiting their work in the public space.

In the juried show I tried to capture some of the range that so captivated me initially. There is work that is political, about globalism and otherness. There is work that is mystical and transcendental, about the wonder that comes from created things. There is work that is psychological, disturbing and beautifully awkward. And there is great craft in many media and with an array of historical precedents. In this final exhibition depictions of the world of everyday things share the stage with more sublime subjects and forms, for one is dependent on the other. All is visual culture. All is prized. The famous Dadaist, Marcel Duchamp, believed that anyone could be an aritist - if given the opportunity. The Hub City Art Market is a glorious example of the creative spirit to which Duchamp refers - and it is a tribute to the possibility for human expression that only art can provide.
