Spartanburg Art Museum recieves many requests for appraisals of artwork and conservation consultations.  The Museum is not legally permitted to act as an appraiser and does not do so.  Contact information for several area appraisers are listed below, however, to make us of at your discretion.  SAM is not affiliated with these appraisers in any way.  The Museum's official policy, as outlined in the "Staff Policies Related to Acquisitions" section of its collections management policy, is as follows:

"It has been the Museum's longstanding policy not to provide appraisals to donors, staff & board members, artists, or the general public. Under current IRS guidelines, the Museum cannot act as a qualified appraiser because of the inherent conflict with its role as a donee. If a donor, staff or board member, artist, or member of general public asks for assistance in locating an appropriate appraiser, the curator/museum staff may suggest several area appraisers with which the museum is unaffiliated. More than one name must be given. The Museum should not make arrangements for the appraisal and cannot pay for the appraisal. The museum does not facilitate conractual or logistical execution of these transactions in any fashion whatsoever, nor does it stand as the guarantor of the quality or reliability of their services."
