Henry Gasser
American, b.1909 d.1981

Henry Gasser was born in Newark, NJ. Newark. In his early years, Gasser had the good fortune to meet the artist John R. Grabach (1880-1981), who was an Ashcan school practitioner (started by Robert Henri, artist of “The Girl with Red Hair” in the collection of The Spartanburg Museum of Art). During his years in the military, Henry Gasser was stationed at Camp Croft in Spartanburg.

Isabella Groblewski

Isabella T. Groblewski was a native of Boston who came to Spartanburg with her husband, Harry, who was first headmaster of the Spartanburg Day School. A graduate of The Boston Museum School, and the Sudbury Art Center, she also studied with Herbert Mears in Houston, Texas.

Juried into The Artists' Guild of Spartanburg in 1958 and active through 1964, Groblewski was one of the motivating forces behind the art classes the guild started, and was on the committee that designed and produced the appointment calendars in ‘60 and ‘61 to raise money for an art center and local art education. She was on the first Board of the Art Association.

The note at the bottom of print: "To Frank From Isabella" was to Frank Austin Coleman, founder of the Artists’ Guild and one of the founders of the Historical Association.

Albert Capers Guerry
Spartanburg, SC - b.1840 d.1898

Robert E. Lee. 1872. oil on canvas

In 1872, the Town Council of Spartanburg voted to commission Prof. Albert Guerry to paint a life size portrait of Gen. Lee after his death using a coat sent by Mary Custis Lee that the General had worn once. Guerry's commissions of Presidents Benjamin Harrison, Grover Cleveland and William McKinley are all in the collection of the White House.
