Margaret
Law
Spartanburg - b.1871 d.1956
One of
Spartanburg’s outstanding artists, gained recognition in this
country as well as abroad. She was a prolific painter and exhibited
in many museums in this country and in France. In 1936 after extensive
study in America and abroad, and a number of years of teaching in the
Bryn Mawr School, she returned to Spartanburg where she served as supervisor
of art in the city schools.

Gang . oil on canvas. 36" x 24"
Law was
fascinated with the theme of the chain gang. This work, along with
Law’s Under the Mimosa, were part of the exhibition American
Women Modernists: The Legacy of Robert Henri which showed during 2005
at the Brigham Young University Museum of Fine Art in Provo, Utah.
