Margaret Law
Spartanburg - b.1871 d.1956

One of Spartanburg’s outstanding artists, gained recognition in this country as well as abroad. She was a prolific painter and exhibited in many museums in this country and in France. In 1936 after extensive study in America and abroad, and a number of years of teaching in the Bryn Mawr School, she returned to Spartanburg where she served as supervisor of art in the city schools.

Law was fascinated with the theme of the chain gang. This work, along with Law’s Under the Mimosa, were part of the exhibition American Women Modernists: The Legacy of Robert Henri which showed during 2005 at the Brigham Young University Museum of Fine Art in Provo, Utah.
