Saussy The Lighthouse. oil on canvasboard. Hattie Saussy was known for her character as well as her talent. She was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1870. From an early age she had an intuitive sense of color and light. She was blinded in her left eye during a childhood accident. At her mother's encouragement, she developed an appreciation of impressionism and took art lessons. When she was in her twenties she moved to New York and then traveled to Europe where she was greatly impressed by the culture and architecture she experienced, especially that of Venice. Saussy traveled around the Carolinas and Georgia. Her penchant for stopping in the middle of nowhere to paint established her as one of the great southern plein-air artists. Hattie died at the age of 88 in Savannah Georgia in 1978.

| Houghton Cranford Smith Smith studied with George Bridgman, William Merritt Chase and Kenneth Hayes Miller. After his first wife died, Smith married Laura Gilbert Williams of Lancaster, SC, who was to be his wife, stepmother to his children and promoter of his art for the next 40 years.
Dunes at Pawley’s Island. oil on panel. ca.1952-1954. When Houghton Cranford Smith strolled the beach on the south end of Pawley’s Island in the summer of 1954, he was always alive to opportunities to sketch. Besides the numerous paintings he created during the three summers he spent at Pawley’s Island, many of the small rough sketches, hastily scribbled on whatever surface was available, made their way into his paintings for the rest of his life.
