“Mrs. Lightener” a.k.a. Mrs. Lightner, Leightner, Leichtner, Leitner. oil on canvas. 36”h x 28”w. ca.1830-1860.

At some point, the name “Mrs. Lightner” (possibly Leitner or Leichner) became attached to this work. Although we haven’t been able to document either the origin of the alias, and or whether it has any real connection with the identity of the sitter, we are hesitant to disassociate it from the work because it may yet provide some clue about one or more of the mysteries surrounding it.
