AN UPDATE ON AN OLD FRIEND: The Wooden Indian
Art is meant to inspire and this Wooden Indian is based on a 1937 Chief model and has been an inspiration to many. This wooden sculpture is the work of James Evans of Iva, South Carolina. James is an artist, craftsman and creative genius who, not so strangely, thinks differently from mainstream artists and sculptors.

Spring offerings at the Spartanburg County Museum of Art include retrospectives by Russian-born artist Vadim Bora as well as Charlotte-based cartoonist Marcus Hamilton, the pen behind the daily cartoon strip,Dennis The Menace.” A third exhibit features the architectural models of Lin Barnhardt of Mt. Pleasant, whose work employs a dropped vanishing point simulating a bird’s eye view of landmark buildings.

Artist replicates landmarks in miniature clay models
In 2000, he received national recognition when his work was accepted into 10 exhibitions. He received more recognition the following year when the North Carolina Arts Council selected him along with three other artists to design and create an ornament for the White House.

Hamilton is the illustrator for "Dennis the Menace." Since 1993, he has created hundreds of sketches for the mischievous 5 1/2 year-old Dennis from his studio at his home in Charlotte, N.C.

Exhibit to feature a passage west
Photographer Errol Daniels, from Elmhurst, N.Y., spent two years putting the images on film. Thirty-nine of the photographs are on exhibit. These and another 60 are part of the book, "Cuba: A Jewish Journey," that is also available at the museum.

Twelve artists of Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina who have received national and international attention in various publications are featured in a new exhibit at the Spartanburg County Museum of Art in Spartanburg, SC. The show's title, Leaves of Grass: Area Artists in National Publications, was inspired by the book by American poet Walt Whitman, the cultural prophet whose free and rhapsodic voice reflected the energy and ideals of the young America.
