Saturday; 9:00 PM - 12:00 PM
April 8th - April 29th, 2017
Tuition: SAM members $85; non-members $95 - 2 weeks
Robert Woods, SAM’s Ceramic Studio Manager and a glaze development engineer will guide students in learning how to create new glazes by taking an existing glaze and altering it in color and appearance. Participants will be given access to SAM’s ceramic studio’s well-stocked materials in order to experiment, develop and test new glazes on test tiles. This workshop consists of two parts. During the first session instructor will lecture about raw materials and discuss basic chemical properties and types of surface finishes. He will then assist students through the glaze experimentation and alteration process. In the second session, class will review and discuss their results.
This is a great class for those who would like to transition into mixing their own glazes and applying the knowledge in their own home studio. Through this workshop, participants can also potentially develop new glazes for the SAM ceramic studio.
This workshop will meet on two Saturdays - April 8th from 9 am to 12 noon and again on April 29th from 9 am to 11 pm.
SAM is funded in part by the Chapman Cultural Center, INC and its donors, the County and City of Spartanburg, and the South Carolina Arts Commission which receives support from The National Endowment for the Arts.
