Create beautiful and accurate portraits from life! Kathleen breaks down each process step-by-step as she explains head placement, blocking in shapes, facial proportions, and value rendering in graphite and charcoal. Instructor demonstration is followed by individual guidance and assistance.


Supply List:


  • Pad of drawing paper – either 14” x 17” or 18” x 24”
  • 2-3 sheets of charcoal paper or toned paper such as Canson Mi-tientes or other toned pastel paper in a size similar to drawing pad
  • Hard surface for attaching drawing paper and drawing pad – either a large sketch pad board (large enough size to hold paper or drawing pad or a large sheet of smooth Masonite which would serve the same purpose
  • Graphite pencils – variety including 2H, HB, 4B and 6B
  • Charcoal pencils – variety including 2B, 4B, 6B and white
  • Compressed charcoal
  • Pack of conte crayons that contains sepia, brown, white and black
  • Stumps or tortillions
  • Sharpener for the charcoal pencils
  • White eraser
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Sanding block
  • Roll of masking or Artist's tape

  • Pre-registration is required for all classes and students are only registered when payment has been received. In order for instructors to plan properly, students should register at least one (1) week before the start date of the class. If you register less than one week before class, the class fee will increase by $10.
